Ok. I just read the facebook event invitation for Smoothe Moose Event 1: Cogswell vs. The Dream Machine, and I don’t think I feel as bad about putting this post together as I did a minute ago. My buddy Matt Vallerini invited me – he works as an intern for the group – and I know he reads this on occasion, so putting together a bad review is not my idea of a good time right now.
Let’s start with the good things:
There was definitely some decent energy in the place. The DJ “DJ Booogie Longo” was pretty darned good. He spun some good beats from his computer and had an excellently cultivated monotone with a solid rhythm to it. If he did a show all by himself, I’m pretty sure I’d be dancing and laughing the whole time.
They were offering free downloads all night. If you brought your iPod, they’d download the stuff right there. I don’t own an iPod; I don’t think I’d bring one to a show, even if I did.
The band kind of sucked. I think they were called The Suite Unraveling. Maybe we should just put this in perspective and say that I don’t like “progressive” music. Personally, I have a hard time calling this “music” at all. There were a few spots here and there where they achieved a kind of jam-band/decent-sound-check feel, but overall, it was really (for me) nothing more than a string of unfortunate tempo changes.
I tweeted through the whole time I was there, and those are going to comprise the meat of this post. The simple fact that I was tweeting and not dancing the whole time – not to mention the fact that I left after the first set – is a telling fact.
Sorry, Matt. I look forward to checking out the next event, but aside from the DJ and the few minutes I got to hang out with you, the night was (musically) a bust for me. I did, however, have a good time people-watching, tooling around Brooklyn and driving fast & dangerous in and out of the City.
Below are my tweets. It’s getting late and I don’t have time to give you more than just the hyperlinks:
- Seven (in response to Seven-A)
- Fourteen (RT’d later on in the evening: Fourteen-A)
- Seventeen (in response to Seventeen-A)
- Eighteen (never heard back)
So yeah, that’s it. I’m off to bed now – I have to be up in about 5 hours to play golf with my co-workers. I haven’t played all season. Maybe next time, Cogswell.
