My inner monologue has a pretty heavy Cockney accent, so I'm exempt.

In the alternative, I call "poetic license".

Actually, the traditional 5-7-5 scheme is not a hard-fast requirement for a haiku. It does demand that one "recognizes" nature. Faîte accomplit mon ami!...(don't know if my French is spelled correct. Sor')

But you DID bring up my favorite English teacher quips of 'em all. (Brace yourself, I slept two hours after watching the Mets lose in 11 innings at Dodger Stadium last night.)

I regret to point out that, true to the title, (unless that was the Hallelujah of All Puns, then I doff my hat) it is NOT "an haiku". To quote the absolute, undisputed know-it-all Michael Swan in his tireless tome "Practical English Useage":
~The choice between 'a' and 'an' depends on pronunciation, not
 spelling.
~We use 'an' before a vowel sound "an hour" or "an MC", "an honor".
~[Conversely] we use 'a' before a consonant sound, even if it is written as a vowel. "a university" or "a one-dollar bill".
(-Swan, 61. Oxford University Press, 1980.)

Since the "h" is pronounced as a consonant in "haiku", "hotel", "housewife"...it gets the "a" article. "Historical" is one of the rare instances where either the "a/an" indefinite article might be acceptable depending on one's accent, purely to avoid cacophony.

Sorry to be such a b*tch, dah-ling. Let's all hope Ryan Church remembers to tag up on third before heading home next time.

Oh yeah...and before you think I'm all high and mighty, I FORGOT the password to my blog and wordpress refuses to believe I'm me. So, yeah. Duh...
